The surviving masonry and archaeological remains on the site allow study of the layout of an early medieval abbey and its relationship to the surrounding civitas.
The abbey complex was established in the early medieval period and the westwork was constructed in the 9th century during the Carolingian era. Over subsequent centuries the site evolved with Romanesque and later modifications, and its ecclesiastical and territorial role shifted as political control and monastic functions changed.
