Caroline Island is an uninhabited coral atoll in the Line Islands of Kiribati, often referred to as Millennium Island following a national renaming around the year 2000. It is a remote, low-lying atoll composed of a ring of islets enclosing a central lagoon.
The atoll is notable for intact seabird colonies, turtle nesting beaches and undisturbed reef ecosystems, which make it important for conservation and scientific visits. There are no permanent settlements and access is infrequent, typically limited to occasional scientific or conservation expeditions.
Historically the atoll was charted by European navigators and later came under British then Kiribati administration; its remoteness and lack of fresh water have kept it uninhabited. It sits in the central Pacific as part of Kiribati’s Line Islands group.
