Main image

Carnuntum is a Roman archaeological complex in Lower Austria, comprising the remains of a legionary camp and an adjacent civilian town that flourished in the 1st to 4th centuries AD. It is an important site for understanding Roman presence on the Danube frontier.

Extensive excavated ruins, a large amphitheatre, and reconstructed domestic and public buildings that visitors can enter to get a sense of urban layout and construction. A museum on site displays artefacts recovered from excavations and supports guided tours and living history events.

The settlement began as a Roman military camp that developed into a significant civilian centre during the early imperial period; it was occupied and evolved through the 1st to 4th centuries AD, with decline after the late Roman period. Archaeological investigation and reconstruction work have been ongoing since the 19th and 20th centuries.

Carnuntum sits on the south bank of the Danube in Lower Austria near the modern town of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, where the river plain provided a strategic frontier zone in Roman times.

  • Excavation and reconstructions: Archaeological work at the site combines excavated ruins with full-scale reconstructions to illustrate Roman urban and military life.

How to Get to Carnuntum #

The Roman site of Carnuntum is near Petronell‑Carnuntum east of Vienna. You can reach it by regional rail / S‑Bahn from Vienna toward Marchegg (S7) to Petronell‑Carnuntum station and then a short taxi ride or local bus to the archaeological park, or drive from Vienna via the A4/E60 (the site is roughly a 25-35 km drive east of central Vienna depending on route). Parking is available at the visitor centre and the main reconstructions are a short walk from there.

Tips for Visiting Carnuntum #

  • Start at the Carnuntum Archaeological Park visitor centre to pick up a combined ticket and map-this saves time and makes it easier to see both the indoor museum exhibits and the reconstructed Roman town, which are on different sites.
  • If possible, visit on a weekday or outside school holiday dates to avoid large guided-school groups; spending time in the open-air reconstructions (houses, workshops, amphitheatre) is where most casual visitors miss the hands-on reconstructions and demonstrations.
