Carnac stones
Monument Prehistoric megalithic stone alignments in Brittany
The Carnac stones are extensive Neolithic alignments on Brittany’s coast: rows of standing menhirs, dolmens and burial mounds. Visitors study prehistoric archaeology, walk between stone rows and visit the on-site museum.
The Carnac stones are an extensive Neolithic megalithic complex on the Gulf of Morbihan coast in Brittany, France, consisting of thousands of standing stones, dolmens and burial mounds. The site is notable for the dense rows of menhirs arranged in long alignments across fields.
Major features include the Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan alignments, which together form the principal stone rows, and nearby burial tumuli such as the Tumulus of Saint-Michel. The alignments comprise roughly 3,000 stones in total and extend for more than 4 kilometres across the landscape.
Archaeological study attributes the constructions to Neolithic communities several millennia before the Common Era; their precise function remains the subject of research and interpretation. The area is protected and managed for its archaeological and cultural value.
The Carnac complex lies near the town of Carnac in the Morbihan department of Brittany, within easy access of coastal roads and local visitor facilities.
- Scale of the site: The Carnac complex contains roughly 3,000 standing stones arranged in long alignments that together stretch for more than 4 kilometres.
- Age and significance: The site dates to the Neolithic period (several millennia before the Common Era) and is one of the largest megalithic sites in Europe.

The Carnac stone alignments are reached via the town of Carnac in Morbihan. By car from the nearby city of Vannes it’s about 20-25 km (roughly 25-30 minutes) primarily via the N165 and local roads; from Lorient it’s about 25-35 km. Take TER trains to Auray or Lorient and then a short regional bus or taxi to Carnac (regional bus services operate in summer); the main alignments are within a short walk from Carnac town centre (typically 5-20 minutes depending on which site you visit).
Tips for Visiting Carnac stones #
- Go at sunrise or late afternoon for better light on the alignments and to avoid coach‑tour crowds that arrive midmorning; shoulder seasons (spring/early autumn) are noticeably quieter.
- Start at the Musée de Préhistoire (visitor centre) to get orientation, maps and a suggested walking circuit - the museum is the best place to learn the context before exploring the fields.
- Walk the longer Kermario and Kerlescan routes rather than just the Ménec roadside row: the more distant alignments and nearby tumuli are less crowded and reveal different stone styles and settings that many visitors miss.
