Carihuairazo is a volcanic mountain massif in central Ecuador’s high Andes, located in Tungurahua Province near the better-known Chimborazo. It is a rugged, glaciated peak that forms part of the volcanic belt of the Ecuadorian Sierra.
The massif comprises multiple summits and saddles with steep couloirs and glacier remnants; routes are used by experienced mountaineers who approach from adjoining valleys. Carihuairazo is an eroded stratovolcano that developed during the same Andean volcanic processes that produced surrounding peaks; its glaciation and summit morphology have changed over time due to erosion and volcanic history. Human activity on the mountain has been principally mountaineering and local pastoral use of lower slopes.
The peak lies in central Ecuador in Tungurahua Province, in the high Andes near Chimborazo and other major volcanic peaks of the Sierra region.

Most guided climbs depart from Riobamba - a 1-2 hour drive depending on the chosen approach and road conditions.

- Acclimatize for 2-3 days in Riobamba or Ambato before attempting high routes.
- Hire a local guide from Riobamba - the trails and weather change fast and route-finding can be tricky above 4,000 m.
- Start very early (pre-dawn) to avoid afternoon clouds and wind; be prepared for rockfall on loose slopes.
- Carry glacier equipment and check recent reports - small glaciers and permanent snowfields have retreated significantly in the last decades.
