Main image

Carihuairazo is a volcanic mountain massif in central Ecuador’s high Andes, located in Tungurahua Province near the better-known Chimborazo. It is a rugged, glaciated peak that forms part of the volcanic belt of the Ecuadorian Sierra.

The massif comprises multiple summits and saddles with steep couloirs and glacier remnants; routes are used by experienced mountaineers who approach from adjoining valleys. High-elevation terrain and rapidly changing weather are primary considerations for visitors planning climbs or high-altitude visits.

Carihuairazo is an eroded stratovolcano that developed during the same Andean volcanic processes that produced surrounding peaks; its glaciation and summit morphology have changed over time due to erosion and volcanic history. Human activity on the mountain has been principally mountaineering and local pastoral use of lower slopes.

The peak lies in central Ecuador in Tungurahua Province, in the high Andes near Chimborazo and other major volcanic peaks of the Sierra region.

  • Climbing and conditions: The mountain forms part of the high Andean mass near Chimborazo and is visible from surrounding valleys; weather and glacial conditions make ascents technical and season-dependent.

How to Get to Carihuairazo #

The usual base towns are Riobamba (to the south) and Ambato (to the north). From Riobamba, take the eastbound road toward Chimborazo/Guamote and follow local roads toward the small highland villages that serve as trailheads (ask at local hosterías for the route). Most guided climbs depart from Riobamba - a 1-2 hour drive depending on the chosen approach and road conditions.

Tips for Visiting Carihuairazo #

  • Acclimatize for 2-3 days in Riobamba or Ambato before attempting high routes.
  • Hire a local guide from Riobamba - the trails and weather change fast and route-finding can be tricky above 4,000 m.
  • Start very early (pre-dawn) to avoid afternoon clouds and wind; be prepared for rockfall on loose slopes.
  • Carry glacier equipment and check recent reports - small glaciers and permanent snowfields have retreated significantly in the last decades.

Best Time to Visit Carihuairazo #

The safest time for travel and climbing is the Andean dry season (June-September); weather in the Ecuadorian highlands is highly variable outside these months.

Dry season (best for climbing)
June-September · -10°C to 8°C at summit; 5-15°C in base towns
Clear skies, more stable weather and the most reliable window for summit attempts. Nights are cold and wind can be bitter.
Shoulder season
May and October · -5°C to 10°C
Unpredictable: there are fine days but also sudden snowstorms. Fewer trekkers but less margin for error.
