Cappella Sansevero

Cappella Sansevero is an 18th-century chapel in central Naples, Italy, renowned for its elaborate marble sculpture and interior decoration. It is most famous for a single highly detailed masterpiece that draws international attention.

The chapel’s interior contains richly carved marble sculptures, decorative inlay work and artistic trompe-l’oeil; the centerpiece is the finely detailed veiled figure that commands the main chamber. The site is compact but densely decorated, with artworks concentrated in a single chapels complex.

The chapel was redecorated and expanded in the 18th century by Prince Raimondo di Sangro and associated artists and sculptors, who commissioned the marble works and designed much of the interior ornament. The most famous sculpture was completed in the mid-18th century.

Cappella Sansevero stands in the historic center of Naples, within walking distance of other central landmarks and squares in the city’s old town.
