Cape Melville National Park (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land)

Cape Melville National Park (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land) is a remote protected area on the eastern side of the far northern Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. It is recognised for its unusual landscape of massive granite boulders and isolated rainforest pockets.

The park’s main attractions are the vast granite boulder fields and the small, elevated rainforest enclaves trapped among the rocks. These enclaves host flora and fauna not found widely elsewhere, and the terrain creates maze-like walking routes and scenic plateaus rather than long developed trails.

The land is part of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land and has long cultural significance to Traditional Owners; protection for conservation and cultural values has restricted development. Visitor access is therefore limited, and trips commonly require suitable vehicles, boat or air transport and adherence to permit or access conditions.

Geographically the park occupies a remote section of eastern Cape York, with rugged coastal ranges and offshore islands; there are no large towns nearby and travel into the park is often long and logistically demanding.

• Rainforest pockets: Scattered rainforest enclaves and plateaus that contain locally endemic plants and animals adapted to isolated conditions.
