The cape is notable for its dramatic coastal topography and deep surrounding waters. The promontory is also known as the site off which the World War II naval Battle of Cape Matapan took place in March 1941.
Access is by country road from inland Mani settlements and from coastal ports; the immediate area is sparsely populated and characterised by rocky shoreline and small harbours.
