Cape Horn

Cape Remote headland marking southern navigation around South America

Cape Horn marks the rocky headland at the southern end of Chilean archipelago; sailors and expedition cruisers visit for the lighthouse, sea cliffs and the harsh, unpredictable Southern Ocean.

Main image

Cape Horn is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, located on Isla Hornos in southern Chile, and a historically significant maritime landmark. It marks a major navigational milestone between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and near the northern limit of the Drake Passage.

The site includes a small Chilean lighthouse and a commemorative monument and cross frequently visited by cruise passengers and expedition teams when weather permits landings. The cape is famous in sailing lore as a challenging rounding point because of frequent strong winds and rough seas.

European naming and charting date from 1616 when Dutch navigator Willem Schouten rounded the cape and named it after his home town of Hoorn. Control and administration of the cape fall under Chilean authorities as part of the Cabo de Hornos commune.

Situated off the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn lies well to the south of mainland Chile and is reached mainly by sea; landing is weather-dependent and often limited to expedition cruises and naval visits.

  • European discovery: First rounded in European records by Dutch navigator Willem Schouten in 1616, after whom the cape is named (after the Dutch town of Hoorn).
  • Geographic note: Located on Hornos Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, it is the southernmost headland of the archipelago commonly noted as a major maritime landmark.

How to Get to Cape Horn #

Cape Horn (Hornos Island) is only reachable by sea. Expedition cruises and day trips depart from Ushuaia (Argentina) and occasionally from Puerto Williams (Chile); there are no roads to Cape Horn and landings are made by ship/zodiac as weather permits.

Tips for Visiting Cape Horn #

  • The only practical way to reach Cape Horn is on an expedition cruise (most depart from Ushuaia) during the austral summer (December-March); pick operators that prioritize small-group landings if you want the best chance of a shore visit.
  • Understand that landings at Cape Horn are weather‑dependent and often cancelled-book flexible travel around the cruise and be prepared that many trips will circle rather than land; if a landing is allowed, follow park ranger instructions and keep visits short.

Best Time to Visit Cape Horn #

If visiting Cape Horn by expedition or cruise, plan for the austral summer (December-February) when conditions are least severe, though weather remains unpredictable year‑round.

Summer (best time)
Dec-Feb · 5-10°C
Relatively milder weather and the most common season for expeditions - seas are still unpredictable, but conditions are generally most favorable.
Shoulder seasons
Oct-Nov, Mar-Apr · 0-10°C
Weather is more changeable and seas can be rough; still possible to visit but expect variable conditions.
Winter
Jun-Aug · -5-5°C
Harsh, stormy conditions and very rough seas make visits uncommon and more challenging.
