Cape Espichel
Cape Clifftop promontory with historic sanctuary and lighthouse
A limestone headland west of Sesimbra, Cape Espichel features a cliff-top sanctuary, lighthouse and broad Atlantic views; visitors come for pilgrimage history, coastal walks and seabird observation.
Cape Espichel is a prominent headland on the western edge of the Setúbal peninsula in Portugal, in Setúbal District, known for its historic pilgrimage sanctuary and lighthouse. Coastal cliffs and cultural monuments mark it as both a maritime landmark and a religious site.
The site’s principal features are the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo with its large pilgrimage esplanade and the Cape Espichel lighthouse, both set on dramatic coastal cliffs. On the rock platforms below the cliffs there are well-known dinosaur footprint impressions preserved in Jurassic limestone that attract scientific and general interest. Walked coastal paths provide panoramic views over the Atlantic and the shoreline.
The sanctuary complex developed as a pilgrimage destination from the early modern period, with major construction and architectural additions occurring in the 17th and 18th centuries to accommodate large numbers of worshippers. The lighthouse and associated navigational works were established later to serve maritime traffic along the Setúbal coast.
The cape projects into the Atlantic on the western side of the Setúbal peninsula, south of the Arrábida hills and roughly south-southwest of Lisbon on Portugal’s western coast.
- Pilgrimage site: The cape is a long-established pilgrimage destination with large terraces and a monumental approach built for devotional processions.
- Best time for views: Clear coastal paths and cliff-top viewpoints make late afternoon light favourable for photography of the cliffs and seascape.
