Cape Clear Island

Cape Clear Island (Oileán Chléire) is a small inhabited island off the coast of County Cork in southwestern Ireland, noted for its Gaelic culture and wildlife. It is one of Ireland’s recognized Gaeltacht communities.

The island offers coastal walking trails, seabird colonies, and seasonal bird migration observation points that attract birdwatchers and naturalists. There are also cultural attractions including local music sessions, Irish-language activities and a small visitor centre that provides orientation and information about the island’s heritage.

Cape Clear has been inhabited for centuries with a continuity of fishing and island farming traditions; it developed as a local cultural and maritime community rather than a fortified or urban site. Over time tourism and wildlife conservation have become important parts of the island economy.

The island sits offshore from County Cork in the Atlantic approaches to Roaringwater Bay and is reached by ferry from a mainland harbour in West Cork.
