Cap Ferret
Cape Peninsula with oyster villages and Atlantic beaches
A narrow Atlantic peninsula guarding Arcachon Bay with oyster villages, a working harbour and beaches. Tourists cycle between hamlets, taste local oysters and climb the Cap Ferret lighthouse for bay views.
Cap Ferret is a long sandspit peninsula on France’s southwest Atlantic coast that forms the western entrance to Arcachon Bay in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is known for beaches, seasonal tourism, and small oyster-harvesting villages along the bay side.
The peninsula offers ocean-facing beaches on its Atlantic side and more sheltered waters and oyster villages on the bay side; walking, bathing, seafood tasting, and boat access to the Arcachon basin are common activities. A lighthouse near the tip provides panoramic views across the bay and the Banc d’Arguin sandbank.
Originally a fishing and oyster-farming area, Cap Ferret developed as a seasonal resort and recreational coastline through the 20th century while retaining small-scale maritime industries and village clusters.
Cap Ferret sits at the western entrance to Arcachon Bay in the Gironde department of southwestern France, forming a narrow barrier between the open Atlantic and the bay waters.
- Geographic role: The Cap Ferret peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean from Arcachon Bay and is known for its mixture of ocean beaches and bay-side oyster huts.
- Access note: Accessible by ferry from Arcachon to the tip during the summer season, offering a common route for day visitors.
What to See #
- Cap Ferret Lighthouse: Phare du Cap Ferret is a tall coastal lighthouse near the tip of the peninsula serving as a local navigational aid and viewpoint.
- Beaches and oyster villages: Atlantic-facing beaches along the ocean side and sheltered Arcachon Bay beaches on the interior side, with oyster-harvesting villages and small ports clustered along the bay.
How to Get to Cap Ferret #
Cap Ferret is about 70-90 minutes by car from Bordeaux. Regular car ferries and passenger ferries cross Arcachon Bay from Arcachon to the tip of Cap Ferret; local buses and bicycle hire make getting around the peninsula straightforward.
Tips for Visiting Cap Ferret #
- Take the small passenger ferry from Arcachon to the tip of Cap Ferret to avoid the long drive and to enjoy the bay views.
- Visit the oyster villages (e.g., L'Herbe, Le Canon) for fresh oysters and a more authentic local atmosphere than the resort strips.
