Main image

Canunda National Park is a coastal national park in southeast South Australia protecting a long stretch of shoreline, dunes and coastal vegetation. The park conserves both sandy beaches and rugged limestone coastline and supports coastal wildlife and recreation.

Beach and dune systems dominate the park, with long sandy stretches, mobile dunes and rocky headlands that are used for walking, fishing and shoreline viewing. Several cliffs and lookout points give expansive views over the Southern Ocean and are used for seasonal marine wildlife observation.

The area was progressively set aside for conservation in the 20th century and is managed by the South Australian government to protect coastal habitats and allow for low-impact recreation. Management focuses on erosion control and balancing recreational uses with habitat protection.

The park sits on the southeast coast of South Australia along the Southern Ocean. It lies along the state’s southeast coastal belt south of the main agricultural districts and is accessed from nearby coastal towns and roads.

  • Viewing and access: Coastal 4WD tracks, long sandy beaches and cliffs provide several viewpoints for whale watching in season and shore fishing from accessible headlands.
  • Landscape and rules: Mobile sand dunes and limestone cliffs are significant landscape features; check local park management for permitted vehicle routes and camping rules.
