Canossa Castle
Castle Medieval hilltop castle famous for the 1077 penance
The ruins of Canossa Castle in Emilia-Romagna mark the site of a famous 1077 encounter between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII; tourists visit for medieval ruins and hilltop views.
Canossa Castle is a ruined medieval fortress complex in the comune of Canossa, province of Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy. It is best known for the dramatic 1077 meeting involving Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII.
The site consists of hilltop ruins - curtain walls, towers and the remains of a keep - spread across a rocky ridge. Visitors come to inspect the medieval masonry, interpretive panels and short trails that give panoramic views across the valley of the River Enza. The complex comprises several linked strongpoints rather than a single intact castle.
The original fortifications were established by the Canossa family in the 10th and 11th centuries and became the power base of Matilda of Tuscany in the early 11th century. The castle is best known historically for the 1077 episode; in later centuries it fell out of strategic use and survived only as ruins.
The ruins sit on a rocky spur above the Enza valley in the Apennine foothills, within the comune of Canossa in the province of Reggio Emilia.
