Canjuers
Plateau High plateau used as military training area
Limestone plateau in Var largely occupied by the French military reservation (Camp de Canjuers); noted for open scrubland and rural roads used by cyclists and hikers where access is permitted.
Canjuers (Le Canjuers) is a large military training area on the limestone plateau in the Var department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The site is used by the French military for live-fire exercises and manoeuvres and is characterized by open plateau and Mediterranean scrubland.
Because it is an active military zone, public access is restricted and the landscape is managed primarily for training operations rather than recreation. Surrounding roads and villages are located outside the controlled perimeter.
The plateau was consolidated for defence use in the 20th century and remains an operational training area for the French armed forces.
Geographically the zone lies inland in Var on a high plateau region of Provence, generally east of Draguignan and west of the Verdon area.
- Restricted military zone: The area is a large military training and firing range administered by the French armed forces and is generally closed to the public except for specific, restricted access periods.
How to Get to Canjuers #
The Plateau de Canjuers is inland from Draguignan and Brignoles. Access is by regional roads (D-drives) from the Var department; be aware that parts are restricted military zones-check local signage and prefecture notices for access restrictions.
Tips for Visiting Canjuers #
- Respect military restrictions: parts of the plateau are used for training and are off-limits when exercises are scheduled.
- Visit the nearby hilltops at dawn for vast views of Provence and the Mediterranean horizon on a clear day.
- Wear sturdy footwear-the terrain is limestone and can be loose underfoot.
