Candelária Church

The Candelária Church (Igreja da Candelária) is a Roman Catholic church in central Rio de Janeiro noted for its large scale and richly decorated interior. Construction began in the late 18th century and the present building reflects work and alterations carried out through the 19th century.

The church contains large frescoes, marble altars and ornate chapels and sits on Praça Pio X close to the city’s historic port area. Its Neoclassical façade and twin towers are a landmark in Rio’s Centro district and the site is used for religious services and cultural visits.
