Calea Victoriei

Calea Victoriei is a major historic avenue in central Bucharest, Romania, and one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. The street took its current name in the late 19th century following Romania’s war of independence and developed as a principal route in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The avenue is lined with 18th to early 20th-century buildings, including banking palaces, concert halls, museums and shops, and it functions as an important cultural and commercial artery for about 2.7 kilometres. Notable landmarks along its length include the CEC Palace, the Romanian Athenaeum and Revolution Square.

Calea Victoriei evolved from older roads and was modernised during Bucharest’s 19th-century urban expansion; it has hosted parades, civic events and commercial development through the 19th and 20th centuries. Its appearance today reflects successive phases of neoclassical, baroque and early-modern architecture.
