Cahuachi

Cahuachi is an extensive archaeological ceremonial centre of the Nazca culture in the Department of Ica, southern coastal Peru, recognised for its large adobe mounds and plazas. It is one of the principal ritual sites associated with Nazca ceremonial life rather than dense urban habitation.

The site consists of numerous adobe platforms and mound complexes arranged around open plazas, interpreted as loci for large-scale ritual gatherings and pilgrimage. Excavated sectors have produced pottery, ritual objects and evidence of repeated construction phases dating to the early centuries of the first millennium AD.

Cahuachi was used as a ceremonial and pilgrimage centre by the Nazca culture and shows construction and use phases mainly in the first several centuries AD; archaeological investigations in the 20th century revealed the site’s ceremonial layout and material assemblages. It is considered distinct from contemporary administrative or urban settlements.

The site lies in the coastal desert of the Ica Department, inland from the Pacific coast and within the Nazca cultural region of southern Peru, accessible from regional towns and archaeological itineraries in the area.
