Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle is a large medieval fortress on an island in the River Suir at Cahir town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is recognised as one of the best-preserved Norman castles in the country and is a major local heritage site.

The site features a well-preserved keep, thick curtain walls, towers and internal chambers open for visitor inspection, with explanatory displays about the castle’s structure. The compact, intact nature of the complex makes it straightforward to explore the main defensive and residential spaces in a short visit.

Construction began in the medieval period as a Norman stronghold and the castle later became associated with the Butler family and other regional lords; it has seen repairs and alterations through the late medieval and early modern eras. In the 20th century the site was conserved and opened for public access.

Positioned on a small island in the River Suir within the town of Cahir, the castle is reachable by the town bridge and lies on regional roads linking Tipperary, Clonmel and other nearby centres.
