Caelian Hill
Hill One of Rome's seven hills with historic sites
Caelian Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills, offers terraces with medieval churches and quieter streets; visitors walk its slopes for views of the Colosseum and historic Roman layers.
Caelian Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome, is a raised district immediately southeast of the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It has been occupied since antiquity and today combines archaeological sites, early Christian churches and residential streets.
The slope contains notable churches from late antiquity and the early medieval period, and quieter parked areas that provide viewpoints over the Roman Forum and Imperial monuments. Visitors come for these churches, for walks among ancient walls, and for views of nearby landmarks.
In ancient Rome the hill hosted elite residences and later monasteries and churches; many early Christian buildings on the Caelian preserve architectural and artistic elements from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Over the centuries the hill changed from a primarily aristocratic quarter to a mixed urban area with religious institutions.
The Caelian Hill lies within Rome’s historical centre, directly adjacent to the Palatine and within a short walk of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
- Position: One of Rome's seven traditional hills, it sits immediately southeast of the Colosseum and is part of the city's archaeological core.
- What to see: The hill contains several early Christian churches and quieter green spaces, offering different perspectives of the Imperial Forum and Palatine area nearby.
What to See #
- Santo Stefano Rotondo: A fourth-century basilica in Rome notable for its circular plan and early Christian mosaics, located high on the Caelian slope.
- Santi Giovanni e Paolo: A medieval and later basilica dedicated to Saints John and Paul that stands on the hill and incorporates ancient Roman structures in its complex.
How to Get to Caelian Hill #
The Caelian Hill sits just southeast of the Colosseum; use the Colosseo Metro stop (Line B) or bus lines that run along Via Dei Fori Imperiali and then walk up into the quarter.
Tips for Visiting Caelian Hill #
- Walk the Caelian Hill's quieter lanes rather than trying to see everything in one loop: the area shelters Roman ruins and lesser-known churches away from the tourist flow.
- Pair this walk with visits to the nearby Colosseum and later the Baths of Caracalla to see how the hill fit into Rome's topography of power.
- Wear a hat: exposed sections of the hill offer little shade in summer.
