Cadmea
Archaeological Site Ancient Theban citadel and classical archaeological site
The Cadmea marks the ancient citadel of Thebes, visited for archaeological remains, classical ruins and elevated views over the Boeotian plain and the city’s modern streets.
The Cadmea is the ancient citadel of Thebes in Boeotia, Central Greece, known in antiquity as the fortified acropolis of the city. The name links it to the mythical founder Cadmus and to the defensive heart of Thebes.
Remains of fortifications and archaeological traces mark the hilltop, where low walls, foundation courses and scattered classical remains indicate the footprint of the ancient citadel. The position provides direct views over the plain of Boeotia and the modern town of Thiva, helping visitors understand the strategic siting of the ancient settlement.
The Cadmea served as the acropolis and stronghold of Thebes through the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods and is repeatedly mentioned in ancient sources as the political and military center of the city. Over time the area was rebuilt and altered by successive powers, and archaeological work has identified remains from multiple periods of occupation.
The citadel stands within the modern city of Thiva (Thebes) in Central Greece, on a hill that dominates the surrounding Boeotian plain, approximately 50 km northwest of Athens.
- Viewing point: Located on the high point of ancient Thebes, the site gives panoramic views across the Boeotian plain which are useful for orienting the layout of the ancient city.
