Cabo Orange National Park

National Park Coastal Amazon national park protecting mangroves and wildlife

Cabo Orange National Park occupies coastal wetlands and mangroves in northern Brazil’s Amapá. Ecotourists look for birdlife, coastal river channels, remote fishing communities and guided boat trips through protected estuaries.

Main image

Cabo Orange National Park is a federally protected park on Brazil’s northern Atlantic coast in the state of Amapá, along the border with French Guiana. It protects extensive mangrove forests, tidal channels and coastal savanna ecosystems that are uncommon elsewhere in Brazil.

The park is a remote, low-lying landscape of tidal marshes, mangroves and beach-rimmed channels. Boat travel and guided river excursions are the normal ways to see the shoreline habitats and associated birdlife; there are long seasonal tidal cycles and wide mudflats at low tide.

Created by the Brazilian federal government as a national park to conserve coastal wetland ecosystems, the area is part of Brazil’s federal protected-area network and is managed under Brazil’s national protected-area authorities. Over time management has focused on protecting habitat for migratory and resident wetland species and on regulating access.

The park sits at the mouth of the Oiapoque (Oyapock) River on Brazil’s northern coast in Amapá state, facing the Atlantic and adjacent to the border with French Guiana. The landscape is dominated by flat coastal plains and river estuaries rather than highland terrain.
