Wikivoyage banner

Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It is widely marked as a geographic extremity and is a popular stop on coastal excursions from Lisbon and Sintra.

The headland is dominated by high rocky cliffs that drop to the Atlantic and offer panoramic ocean views. A stone monument and a small visitor area mark the precise point; short coastal paths provide a few lookouts and access to nearby beaches. The site is compact but busy in summer due to its geographic significance.

The cape and surrounding coast have been used as a navigational reference for centuries and the lighthouse on the site has guided ships along this stretch of the Portuguese coast. Over time the location evolved into a formal viewpoint with signage and visitor facilities to accommodate tourists.

Cabo da Roca sits about 18 kilometers west of Sintra and roughly 40 kilometers northwest of central Lisbon. The site occupies a high cliff on the Atlantic shoreline within the protected landscape of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and is reached by road from nearby coastal towns.

  • Protected area: Located inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, making it subject to parking limits and seasonal visitor management.
  • Best time: Best light for photography is late afternoon and at sunset when the sun drops toward the Atlantic; the cliff edge can be windy and exposed.

What to See #

  • Monument and viewpoint: A stone marker and small visitor area denote the westernmost point of continental Europe and provide an orientation panel and viewing platform over the cliffs.
  • Cabo da Roca Lighthouse: A working lighthouse sits slightly inland from the cliff edge and is visible from the visitor area; the site is part of a protected coastal landscape.
  • Clifftop paths: Steep Atlantic-facing cliffs and coastal paths offer short walks and viewpoints down to sea stacks and the shoreline below; trails continue along the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park coastline.

How to Get to Cabo da Roca #

Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is on the Sintra coast. From Sintra take a Scotturb bus that serves Cabo da Roca (route and frequency vary seasonally) - the ride from Sintra is about 20-30 minutes and the viewpoint is a short walk from the bus stop. From Lisbon it is about 40-50 km west (roughly 40-60 minutes by car via A5/IC19 and local roads).

If driving, follow the A5/IC19 toward Cascais then local roads to Cabo da Roca (N247 area); there is a small visitor parking and a short paved path to the cliffs.

Tips for Visiting Cabo da Roca #

  • Plan for late afternoon or early evening to get the best light and to avoid the busiest midday period; the cliff-top viewpoint is less crowded later in the day and offers dramatic sunset views over the Atlantic.
  • Use public Scotturb buses from Sintra or Cascais (check schedules) or park in the small lot and walk to the official viewpoint rather than stopping on the roadside - the designated viewpoint gives safer access and the best photo angles.
  • Take the short coastal paths north from the cape to reach quieter overlooks and Praia da Ursa; many visitors only see the immediate lighthouse area and miss the nearby rugged coves and viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Cabo da Roca #

Cabo da Roca is best in spring or autumn for clearer views and fewer visitors, but be prepared for wind and changing coastal conditions.

Spring (Mar-May)
Mar-May · 12-20°C
Mild temperatures and clearer days make coastal walks and cliff views pleasant; spring is less crowded than summer.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Jun-Aug · 17-25°C
Warmer weather but also the busiest time for visitors; expect wind and occasional coastal fog even in summer.
Autumn & Winter (Sep-Feb)
Sep-Feb · 8-18°C
Cooler, windier, and often dramatic skies-quieter visitor levels make this good for photography if you come prepared for wind.
