Bürgenstock
Mountain Resort ridge above Lake Lucerne with panoramic views
Above Lake Lucerne, the Bürgenstock ridge is known for panoramic lake views, connected hiking paths, historic grand hotels and the Hammetschwand lift-the outdoor elevator that climbs the cliff face.
Bürgenstock is a prominent ridge and resort area above the north shore of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, known for hotel development, panoramic terraces and mountain facilities. The site combines historic hospitality buildings with engineered features and walking routes.
Key attractions include hotel terraces and gardens, a network of walking trails and viewpoints over Lake Lucerne, and the mechanically notable Hammetschwand Lift, which connects lower walkways to a cliff-top observation platform roughly 152 metres up. Boat and funicular links make the ridge easily reachable from lakeside towns.
The ridge developed as a luxury resort area in the 19th and early 20th centuries and remains associated with hospitality and panoramic leisure. Engineering additions such as the lift were installed to improve access to the summit viewpoints and have become signature features.
Bürgenstock sits on the shore of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland within the Canton of Lucerne area, accessible by boat from Lucerne and by road and funicular from nearby lakeside settlements.
- Notable transport feature: The Hammetschwand Lift provides a rapid vertical link from lower terraces to the summit observation platform and is one of the highest outdoor elevators in Europe.
- Typical access route: Access is commonly combined with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne plus the Bürgenstock funicular from Kehrsiten, making the site a popular day excursion from the city of Lucerne.

- Resort and viewpoints: Bürgenstock resort area including historic hotels, terraces and a network of walking trails and viewpoints overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Uri Alps.
How to Get to Bürgenstock #
The Bürgenstock ridge and resort are reached from the Lake Lucerne shore. From Lucerne you can take a lake boat or train to the Kehrsiten/Kehrsiten‑Bürgenstock area and then the Bürgenstock funicular (Bürgenstockbahn) up to the hotel and viewpoints; boats and regional trains on the Lucerne-Stans line serve the lakeside towns. By car, follow the local roads from the A2/A8/Lucerne area to the Kehrsiten/Stansstad lakeshore parking and then the short funicular or walking connection up the hill.
Tips for Visiting Bürgenstock #
- Combine a steamer trip from Lucerne with the short funicular ride from Kehrsiten (Bürgenstockbahn) to arrive relaxed and avoid the main car‑park rush; mornings on weekdays are noticeably quieter.
- Don't miss the Hammetschwand Lift and the cliff‑top panoramic trails that run along the ridge - the elevator viewpoint and the coastal footpaths give the best panorama over Lake Lucerne.
- If you want to escape day‑trippers, consider staying one night at the Bürgenstock hotels to enjoy sunset and the early‑morning light over the lake before excursion boats arrive.
