Burgdorf Castle

Burgdorf Castle (Schloss Burgdorf) is a medieval hilltop castle in the town of Burgdorf in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, with origins in the 12th century.

The castle was founded in the 12th century by regional feudal lords and later became an administrative center under Bernese control in the late medieval period. Over the centuries it served defensive and judicial functions; many of the present visible walls and towers date from expansions between the 12th and 15th centuries and the site was adapted for museum use in modern times.

Sited on a rocky outcrop above Burgdorf and the Emme river, the castle sits in the Emmental region roughly northeast of the city of Bern and is reached from Burgdorf town center on foot or by short local roads.

• Viewpoint: Climb the main tower for wide views across the Emmental valley and the town below; the castle dominates the town skyline and is reached on a short uphill walk from Burgdorf center.
