Burg Kreuzenstein

Burg Kreuzenstein is a romantic, historicist castle near Leobendorf in Lower Austria reconstructed in the late 19th century. It is notable for its deliberate medieval appearance and a large assembled collection of arms and armour.

The site comprises reconstructed curtain walls, towers and a great hall arranged in a compact complex with interiors displayed as a museum of medieval arms and artefacts. Walkways and battlements provide panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and the Danube valley.

The original medieval fortress on the site fell into ruin; in the late 19th century a private owner undertook an extensive rebuilding using salvaged medieval material and a historicist architectural program to create the current castle. Since reconstruction the site has been used as a museum and for cultural events.

The castle sits above the village of Leobendorf in Lower Austria, to the north of Vienna and within easy driving distance of the Vienna metropolitan area, commanding views across the surrounding lowlands and river valley.
