Castle Medieval hilltop castle overlooking Burg town
A restored medieval castle in North Rhine‑Westphalia (Schloss Burg), Burg Castle offers period exhibitions, reconstructed rooms and viewpoints over the Wupper valley for history enthusiasts.
Schloss Burg (Burg Castle) is a reconstructed medieval hill castle on the Wupper river near Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia. The site is the historic seat of the Counts of Berg and functions today as a regional museum and event venue.
The complex presents a reconstructed keep, courtyard and defensive walls together with museum galleries that interpret the medieval history of the Bergisches Land. Visitors commonly tour the museum, climb towers or use the terraces for views across the valley.
The original castle dates to the high medieval period as the residence of the Counts of Berg; it later fell into ruin and was substantially reconstructed during restoration work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The restoration aimed to stabilise and recreate medieval forms for preservation and public use.
The castle is sited on a wooded hill above the Wupper valley in the Bergisches Land region, near the district of Burg in the town of Solingen. The setting is a mix of forested slopes and small towns with road access from nearby urban centres.
- Reconstruction: The visible complex largely reflects a 19th and early 20th century reconstruction performed to restore and stabilise the medieval ruins for public visitation.
- Viewpoints: The castle sits on a wooded hill above the Wupper valley and includes terraces and viewpoints over the surrounding Bergisches Land.
