Burg, Bruges

The Burg is a historic square in the centre of Bruges, Belgium, forming part of the medieval civic heart of the city. It sits next to the Market Square and contains several important civic and religious buildings.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood, a two-level chapel where a relic called the Holy Blood is kept, and the Bruges City Hall (Stadhuis), a late 14th-century Gothic municipal building with an ornate stone facade. The square is compact and paved, with façades from different periods framing the open space.

The Burg developed in the medieval period as Bruges’ administrative and judicial centre; the City Hall dates from the late 14th century and the basilica occupies earlier religious foundations that were altered in later medieval centuries. Over time the square remained a focal point for civic ceremonies and religious observances.

The square lies in central Bruges within the historic centre and is a short walk from the city’s canals and other main tourist sites. Bruges is in West Flanders in northwest Belgium, roughly 100 kilometres north-west of Brussels by road.
