Buonconsiglio Castle

Buonconsiglio Castle is a multi-phase castle complex on a hill in Trento, northern Italy, originating in the medieval period and expanded through the Renaissance. It became the seat and residence of the Prince-Bishops of Trento and is one of the largest castles in the Trentino region.

The complex contains the medieval core and later palatial additions with decorated halls and frescoed interiors across several linked buildings. Interiors include notable fresco cycles and state rooms; the site also presents museum displays covering regional art, history and archeology.

Construction began in the medieval period with a fortified keep and defensive walls; the complex was enlarged from the 14th to the 16th centuries as the bishops converted the fortress into a palatial residence. After the end of episcopal rule the castle passed through state ownership and in modern times was converted into a regional museum and cultural site.

The castle crowns a hill on the western edge of Trento city center, overlooking the Adige valley in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and is easily reached from the historic centre of Trento.
