Bunya Mountains National Park is a protected area in southern Queensland that preserves extensive groves of native bunya pine on a volcanic plateau. The park’s highest point, Mount Kiangarow, rises to about 1,135 metres.
Visitors encounter dense stands of bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii), rainforest pockets, waterfalls and a network of walking tracks and lookouts; facilities include picnic areas, short walks and viewpoints suited to day visits. Trails range from short boardwalks through forest to longer ridge walks and summit routes.
The region was traditionally a seasonal gathering place for Aboriginal peoples who met for bunya nut harvests and related cultural events; the park was later protected to conserve these unique forests and landscapes.
The park sits inland on a plateau in southern Queensland, within driving distance of towns in the South Burnett and Western Downs regions and several hours’ drive northwest of Brisbane.
