Buffavento Castle
Castle Ruined mountain castle with Byzantine and Crusader remains
High in the Kyrenia range, Buffavento Castle offers ruined fortifications and steep approaches; visitors hike for coastal views and medieval battlements.
Buffavento Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in northern Cyprus, set high on the Kyrenia mountain range and notable for its strategic position and ruined defensive structures.
The site consists of stone ruins - defensive walls, remnants of rooms and cisterns - reached by steep footpaths; the elevated position provides panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and down toward the sea. Visitor access is on foot along rough trails and the site is mainly of interest for hiking and views rather than extensive interior displays.
Built in the medieval period and used by successive regional powers, the castle formed part of the defensive chain controlling mountain passes and coastal approaches. Over centuries it was besieged, occupied and adapted before falling into ruin.
Perched on the Kyrenia mountain ridge in the Kyrenia District, the castle overlooks northern Cyprus and sits inland from the island’s northern coastline at a high elevation above the surrounding villages.
- Kyrenia ridge trio: Forms one of three hilltop fortresses along the Kyrenia mountain ridge, together with St. Hilarion and Kantara, offering extensive views over both coasts of northern Cyprus.
