Budj Bim National Park protects volcanic landforms and areas of cultural and environmental significance in southwest Victoria, Australia. The park is part of the broader Budj Bim Cultural Landscape that includes engineered eel traps and channels created by the Gunditjmara people.

Key highlights are the volcanic terrain and the network of stone channels, weirs and modified wetlands used historically for aquaculture and food production. The engineered systems represent a complex modification of the landscape to trap and farm eels and are visible at several sites within the cultural landscape.

The aquaculture infrastructure and associated settlements were created and used by Gunditjmara communities across many generations and are regarded as among the oldest known examples of food-production engineering. The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape received international recognition for this heritage.

The park lies in southwest Victoria on a volcanic plain that includes lava flows and low cones. The landscape combines wetland areas and rocky volcanic features in a rural part of the state.

  • UNESCO inscription: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 for its cultural landscape and ancient engineered aquaculture systems.
  • Deep antiquity: Archaeological and cultural evidence shows human modification of the volcanic landscape and watercourses dating back thousands of years.

What to See #

  • Aquaculture channels and weirs: Extensive channels, stone weirs and modified wetlands representing a manufactured aquaculture system built and used by the Gunditjmara people to harvest short-finned eels.

How to Get to Budj Bim National Park #

Budj Bim National Park (south‑west Victoria) is reached by car via sealed regional roads from nearby towns such as Macarthur and Portland. Visitor facilities and walking tracks are signposted from the local access roads.

Tips for Visiting Budj Bim National Park #

  • Book an Indigenous-guided cultural tour in advance through the local Gunditjmara operators or the park visitor centre to see the eel-trap systems and to understand their cultural significance - self-guided access won't convey the context.
  • Confirm access and road conditions with Parks Victoria or the visitor centre before you go; parts of the cultural landscape are remote and some trails/roads can be closed or require a vehicle with higher clearance.
  • Plan for a full-day visit that includes the visitor centre at Lake Condah (or the official Budj Bim information point) so you can view interpretive displays before touring the landscape with a guide.
