Budj Bim National Park
Park Park protecting Indigenous cultural landscape and ancient eel traps
Protected volcanic landscape in western Victoria encompassing lava flows and parts of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape; visitors learn about ancient Gunditjmara aquaculture, walk trails and view rock formations.
Budj Bim National Park protects volcanic landforms and areas of cultural and environmental significance in southwest Victoria, Australia. The park is part of the broader Budj Bim Cultural Landscape that includes engineered eel traps and channels created by the Gunditjmara people.
Key highlights are the volcanic terrain and the network of stone channels, weirs and modified wetlands used historically for aquaculture and food production. The engineered systems represent a complex modification of the landscape to trap and farm eels and are visible at several sites within the cultural landscape.
The aquaculture infrastructure and associated settlements were created and used by Gunditjmara communities across many generations and are regarded as among the oldest known examples of food-production engineering. The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape received international recognition for this heritage.
The park lies in southwest Victoria on a volcanic plain that includes lava flows and low cones. The landscape combines wetland areas and rocky volcanic features in a rural part of the state.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 for its cultural landscape and ancient engineered aquaculture systems.
- Deep antiquity: Archaeological and cultural evidence shows human modification of the volcanic landscape and watercourses dating back thousands of years.
What to See #
- Aquaculture channels and weirs: Extensive channels, stone weirs and modified wetlands representing a manufactured aquaculture system built and used by the Gunditjmara people to harvest short-finned eels.
