Brownsberg Nature Park
Nature Reserve Tropical forest reserve with hiking trails and waterfalls
Brownsberg Nature Park sits on an inselberg above the Brokopondo Reservoir; trails lead to waterfalls and viewpoints, and visitors go for rainforest hikes and wildlife encounters accessible on day trips from Paramaribo.
Brownsberg Nature Park is a protected rainforest reserve on the Brownsberg plateau in Brokopondo District, Suriname, notable for its upland forest and views over the Brokopondo Reservoir. The park conserves cerrado-like upland rainforest and supports local biodiversity.
Trails of varying difficulty lead from the park road into forested slopes and to a number of waterfalls and lookout points that give panoramic views over the reservoir and surrounding lowlands. Short day hikes and guided nature walks are the main visitor activities; simple lodges and campsites near the park entrance provide accommodation.
The area sits above the Brokopondo Reservoir, which was formed after the construction of the Afobaka Dam in the 1960s; the park was set aside to protect the upland forest and watershed above the reservoir. Over time the site has become both a local recreation area and a conservation site for Surinamese rainforest species.
The park is located in central Suriname on the Brownsberg plateau, near the village of Brownsweg and accessible by road from Paramaribo in a few hours. The landscape is upland tropical forest with steep trails dropping toward the reservoir and river valleys.
