Brocken
Mountain Highest Harz peak, known for fog and folklore
The Brocken crowns the Harz Mountains at about 1,141 m and is reached by foot or the historic narrow‑gauge steam railway. Hikers and day‑trippers come for highland views and exposed weather.
The Brocken is the highest peak of the Harz Mountains in northern Germany, rising to about 1,141 metres above sea level and forming the highest point in the range. It is a prominent natural landmark with strong cultural and scientific associations.
On clear days the summit area provides wide views across the surrounding Harz and lowlands, though the peak is frequently shrouded in mist and wind. The mountain is well known for atmospheric optical phenomena - the Brocken spectre - and for its role in German folklore, including Walpurgis Night traditions.
The Brocken has a long history of scientific and strategic use; it hosted meteorological and military installations in the 20th century and was restricted during the Cold War, with public access restored after German reunification. Today it lies within Harz National Park and is reached by the historic Brocken Railway or by multiple marked hiking routes from nearby towns such as Wernigerode and Schierke.
Geographically the mountain sits in the Harz range in central northern Germany and is a major destination for hikers, nature visitors, and rail tourists.

How to Get to Brocken #
The Brocken (summit of the Harz) is served by the Harz narrow‑gauge railway (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) - the Brockenbahn runs from Wernigerode (and via Drei Annen Hohne) directly to Brocken station at the summit. Many visitors take the steam train from Wernigerode; alternatively there are well‑waymarked hiking trails (from Schierke, Torfhaus and other trailheads) that reach the summit on foot.
Tips for Visiting Brocken #
- Take the historic Brockenbahn (narrow‑gauge steam railway) from Schierke or Wernigerode to avoid steep climbs and parking bottlenecks - the train is part of the experience and drops you close to the summit.
- Plan for an early start on clear mornings for the best long-range visibility (and to increase your chances of seeing the Brocken spectre); the summit is often windy and shrouded in fog, so mornings give the best window for views.
Best Time to Visit Brocken #
The Brocken is best visited in late spring through early autumn for safer, more predictable hiking weather; the summit is frequently foggy and windy year‑round and winters are harsh.
