The Bridgehead of Jülich Fortress comprises historic outer defensive works associated with the fortified town of Jülich in North Rhine-Westphalia. These structures are part of the town’s early-modern military architecture and include earthwork ramparts and related features.

Walkers and history visitors can see surviving rampart shapes, bastion outlines and moats that mark the former defensive perimeter; these features are evident in the town plan and in open green spaces. The works illustrate the scale and form of pre-modern fortification systems used to control river crossings and approaches to Jülich.

Jülich’s fortifications were developed and modified between the 16th and 18th centuries as the town was fortified against contemporary military threats; the bridgehead elements formed part of the outer defenses controlling access across nearby waterways. Over time the military function diminished and many earthworks were preserved as landscape features.

Located in and around the town of Jülich in western Germany, the bridgehead works sit within the urban area approximately 30-40 kilometers northeast of Aachen and are accessible from Jülich’s town center.
