Brežice Castle

Brežice Castle is a historic castle in the town of Brežice in eastern Slovenia, located near the Sava River and close to the Croatian border.

Visitors can see the castle’s courtyard, towers and internal rooms, which contain a regional museum with archaeology, historical and ethnographic displays relating to the Posavje area. The site is visited for its architecture and museum collections rather than being a ruined stronghold.

The present Renaissance-style castle dates from the late 16th century on a site with earlier fortifications; it was altered in subsequent centuries to serve residential and administrative functions before its conversion to museum use.

The castle sits within the centre of Brežice town, close to the Sava riverbank in eastern Slovenia near the confluence area with the Krka and not far from the border with Croatia.
