How to Get to Breves
Breves sits on Marajó Island and is best reached by regional flight or river from Belém. The town also has a small local airport (BVS); many travellers combine a flight to Belém with a boat or short connecting flight to Breves.
Breves Airport (BVS): Breves has a small regional airport (BVS) with flights to and from Belém and other regional centres. If you land at BVS you are already very close to town - local taxis and mototaxis can take you to the centre in 5-15 minutes for a small fee.
Val-de-Cans / Júlio Cezar Ribeiro International Airport (BEL): Belém’s Val‑de‑Cans is the main gateway for Marajó Island. From BEL you can continue to Breves either by a short regional flight or by river transport: small aircraft flights take about 30-40 minutes; river boats take many hours (see bus/boat section) and schedules vary seasonally.
Train: There is no regular long‑distance rail service to Marajó Island or Breves; the rail network in Pará does not serve the island.
Bus / Boat: The key overland+water route is Belém → Breves by river. Passenger boats (voadeiras and larger ferries) run from Belém’s docks to ports on Marajó; travel can take 8-20 hours depending on vessel and tides, and prices vary widely by class. From nearby mainland towns you can also catch intercity buses to river ports and then transfer to boats.
How to Get Around Breves #
Breves sits on Marajó Island and river transport shapes daily life. Within town most places are reachable on foot, by motorcycle taxi (moto‑táxi) or short car taxi trips. Boats and ferries are essential for travel between river communities and to the Pará mainland. Intercity connections run by riverboat and by road/boat combinations to neighbouring towns; services can be irregular, so plan ahead and allow extra time. Bring insect repellent and expect fares to vary by operator.
