Brederode Castle

Brederode Castle is a ruined medieval castle near Santpoort in North Holland, the Netherlands, originating in the 13th century and historically associated with the Van Brederode family. It survives today as archaeological ruins within a small park and estate.

The visible remains include foundation lines, partial wall sections and earthworks that mark the former keep and baileys; these features are compact and suitable for short walks and close inspection. Interpretive signage and informal paths guide visitors around the ruin.

The castle was built in the medieval period by the Brederode family and was besieged and heavily damaged during the Dutch Revolt, with major destruction recorded in 1573; it was subsequently abandoned and fell into ruin over later centuries.

The site sits near Santpoort-Zuid on the North Holland coastal plain, approximately 25 kilometres north of Amsterdam, within dune and woodland landscapes that are popular for recreational walking.
