Trindade (part of the Trindade and Martim Vaz archipelago) is an oceanic island group in the South Atlantic administered by the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. The islands are volcanic in origin and are notable for their remoteness from the mainland.
The islands are ecologically important for seabirds, marine life and sea turtle nesting, and are visited only under restricted conditions for scientific and controlled tourism activities. Human presence is limited and the Brazilian Navy maintains facilities and oversight on the islands.
Trindade is one element of Brazil’s South Atlantic island territories and has been used for scientific stations and occasional eco-tourism visits. The islands are not part of the continental coastline and require sea or air transport to reach.
Geographically the archipelago lies well offshore in the South Atlantic, separated from the Brazilian mainland by over a thousand kilometers, and is exposed oceanic landscape with cliffs, rocky shores and sparse vegetation.
- Access and administration: Administratively part of the state of Espírito Santo, the island group is remote and primarily visited for scientific, military and limited eco-tourism purposes under Brazilian control.
