Brandenbourg Castle
Castle Ruined hilltop castle overlooking the Our valley
Brandenbourg Castle in northeastern Luxembourg survives as a hilltop ruin with towers and a small museum; visitors tour the remains and follow trails through the valley below.
Brandenbourg Castle is a ruined medieval fortress above the village of Brandenbourg in north-eastern Luxembourg, in the Canton of Vianden.
Remains of defensive walls and towers sit on a steep rocky spur and are visited for their historic fabric and for the scenery they overlook; the ruins are compact and reached by footpaths from the village below.
The castle dates to the Middle Ages and functioned as a local defensive stronghold and seat of regional lords; like many such sites it fell into disuse and partial ruin before later conservation and archaeological stabilisation efforts.
The ruin stands immediately above the settlement of Brandenbourg amid wooded hills of north-eastern Luxembourg, within the general area around Vianden.
- Positioning: Perched above the small village of Brandenbourg, the ruin occupies a steep site that provides broad views down the valley and over nearby wooded slopes.
- Visitor note: Access involves a short uphill walk from the village; much of the attraction is the exposed medieval masonry and valley panorama rather than a restored interior.
