Bran Castle
Castle Hilltop Romanian castle linked to Dracula legends
A hilltop fortress near Brașov often marketed around the Dracula legend, Bran Castle serves as a museum of medieval furnishings and Transylvanian history.
Bran Castle is a medieval stone fortress near Bran in Romania, located on a rocky spur above surrounding roads and countryside. It is a national monument and a popular tourist site often associated in popular culture with the Dracula legend.
A compact castle with steep staircases, defensive towers and interior rooms arranged on multiple levels, many of which are set up as museum displays of regional art, weaponry and period furniture. Visitor routes include the courtyard, galleries and the keep with viewpoints over the surrounding hills.
The site’s association with Bram Stoker’s novel has shaped much of its tourist profile, although the castle’s own history is rooted in local border defence and later 19th- and 20th-century restoration.
Originally constructed as a fortified border stronghold in the late medieval period, the castle later passed through various owners and was significantly restored and remodelled in the 19th and early 20th centuries, including use as a royal residence. It now functions largely as a museum.
Perched near the road between Brașov and Râmnicu Vâlcea, the castle is in the Bran area of Brașov County in central Romania, within the southern Carpathian foothills.
- Dracula Association: The castle is commonly linked in tourism to the Dracula legend in marketing, though historical links to Vlad the Impaler are tenuous.
- Views: Location on a rocky hill gives panoramic views over the surrounding Carpathian foothills and the nearby town of Bran or Moieciu depending on approach route.
What to See #
- Inner Keep and Museum Rooms: The main castle complex with towers, narrow staircases and museum rooms displaying medieval artifacts and regional history.
- Courtyard and Fortifications: A steep courtyarded approach and defensive walls on a rocky outcrop that create the castle's fortified silhouette above the local road and village.

Tips for Visiting Bran Castle #
- Arrive at opening or late afternoon to avoid the busiest coach-tour windows around midday; purchasing tickets in advance during high season cuts queue time.
- Take time to walk the viewpoints across the moat and the paths around the hill-these give much better photo angles and a sense of the landscape most interior visitors miss.
- If traveling from Brașov, consider the regular public buses or organized shuttles to Bran rather than driving-parking and coach congestion can be heavy in peak season.
