Bourges Cathedral

Bourges Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne) is a Gothic cathedral in the centre of Bourges, France, notable for its unified Gothic elevations and extensive medieval glass. Major construction began around the late 12th century and the building is recognised as an outstanding example of High Gothic architecture.

The cathedral is especially noted for its large areas of 13th-century stained glass and sculpted portals on the west front. Visitors often focus on the richly carved façades and the continuity of the vaulting and elevations within the nave and choir.

Construction of the present Gothic cathedral began in the late 1100s to replace earlier structures, with the main building phases occurring through the early 13th century; later centuries saw additions and repairs. It has served as the seat of the Archbishop of Bourges and retained its ecclesiastical function across the medieval and modern periods.

The cathedral stands in the historic heart of Bourges in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France, surrounded by the town’s medieval streets and close to other historic civic buildings.
