How to Get to Bodø#
Bodø has its own airport (BOO) close to town and is the northern terminus of Norway’s Nordland Line, so it can be reached by air, long‑distance train or regional buses/ferries. For quick access use the airport; for scenic travel take the overnight/day train from central Norway.
Bodø Airport (BOO): Bodø Airport is located just north of the town (a short drive from the centre). An airport shuttle or local airport bus connects the terminal with the town in roughly 10-15 minutes; single fares are typically around NOK 40-70. Taxis from the airport to town normally cost roughly NOK 150-250 depending on luggage and time of day.
Train: Bodø is the northern terminus of the Nordland Line (Nordlandsbanen) from Trondheim. The rail journey Trondheim-Bodø is long (about 10-12 hours) and is operated by Vy; fares vary considerably by time and booking class, often from several hundred to around a thousand NOK for advance/standard tickets.
Bus & ferry: Local and regional buses link Bodø with surrounding towns and ferry/boat services provide connections to nearby islands and Lofoten (seasonal services vary). Local bus fares are typically modest (NOK 30-150 depending on route and distance).
How to Get Around Bodø#
Use Bodø Airport for the fastest arrival; the Nordland Line offers a memorable but long rail option from Trondheim. Once in Bodø, local buses, ferries and rented cars are the most practical ways to explore the surrounding coast and islands.
- Airport bus (NOK 40-70) - The airport shuttle links Bodø Airport with the town centre in about 10-15 minutes. It’s the most economical transfer option and runs to meet most flights - buy tickets at the machine or driver. It’s cheaper than taxis for solo travellers.
- Long-distance train (NOK 300-900+) - The Nordland Line terminates at Bodø; trains from Trondheim are scenic but long (≈10-12 hours). Book in advance for the best fares and expect a comfortable journey with sleeping/seat options on some services.
- Regional buses & ferries (NOK 30-200) - Regional buses serve surrounding communities and ferries/fast boats link to nearby islands and parts of Lofoten (services vary seasonally). Use local bus operators for day trips; purchase tickets on board or via operator apps where available.
- Car hire (NOK 600+/day) - Car hire is recommended if you want to explore fjords and islands around Bodø at your own pace. Roads are good, but distances and weather can make journeys longer in winter - plan accordingly.
- Taxi (NOK 150-400 (short trips)) - Taxis are widely available for airport transfers and short trips in town; useful for early/late connections or heavy luggage. They are significantly more expensive than bus alternatives.
- Walking - Bodø town centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - waterfront, museums and shops are within easy walking distance.
