Bock (Luxembourg)

The Bock is the rocky promontory in central Luxembourg City that bears the ruins of the early castle and the carved defensive galleries known as the casemates. The site is central to the city’s origins and historic fortifications.

Visitors can walk sections of the casemates and see the ruins and foundations of the medieval castle, as well as panoramic views over the Alzette valley and the Grund quarter. The area forms part of the city’s historic quarter and major sightseeing routes.

The promontory was acquired by Count Siegfried in 963 and became the nucleus of Luxembourg City. Over the medieval and early modern periods the site was expanded into a substantial fortress with carved galleries, ramparts and defensive works; these fortifications were a defining feature of the city for centuries.

The Bock sits in the heart of Luxembourg City above the Alzette river valley, adjacent to the old town and accessible on foot from central squares and transport hubs.
