Bock Casemates
Area Underground fortress tunnels forming UNESCO World Heritage site
Underground fortifications hewn into Luxembourg City’s rock, part of the historic city defenses and UNESCO-listed fortification system. Guided tours navigate tunnels, gun emplacements and lookouts over the old city.
The Bock Casemates are an extensive system of underground tunnels, galleries, and chambers carved into the Bock promontory in Luxembourg City, forming a central element of the city’s historic fortifications. They are a principal historic attraction in Luxembourg’s Old Quarter and form part of the fortified city’s exceptional heritage.
Visitors can explore vaulted passages and chambers that once sheltered soldiers and housed artillery, and see openings and embrasures that look out over the surrounding valleys. The site includes walkways and terraces that provide views across the Alzette and Petrusse valleys and the lower town.
The casemates developed as part of Luxembourg’s fortifications over several centuries, with major phases of expansion in the early modern period; they were used for military defense, troop accommodation, and civil shelter. In the 19th century sections of the city’s fortifications were dismantled under international agreement, but the casemates remained a defining feature of the site.
Situated on the Bock promontory in central Luxembourg City, the casemates overlook the Old Quarter and the river valleys below and are within walking distance of the city center. The location anchors many of the historic views and circulation routes through the historic core.
- UNESCO World Heritage: Recognized as part of the 'Fortress of Luxembourg' UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 1994, as an outstanding example of European fortification architecture.
- Access and tours: Much of the underground network is open to the public, with marked routes and interpretive signage; guided tours are also commonly offered seasonally.
What to See #
- Casemates galleries: Visitors can walk through vaulted galleries and chambers cut into the Bock promontory, with interpretive panels and passageways that reveal the fortress' defensive layout.
- Bock promontory: A rocky promontory above the Alzette river that formed the strategic core of Luxembourg's medieval and early modern fortifications and supports the casemates complex.
- Viewing terraces: Terraces and walkways offer panoramic views over the Alzette and Petrusse valleys and the lower Old Quarter, which illustrate why the site was a strategic defensive position.
How to Get to Bock Casemates #
The Bock Casemates sit in Luxembourg City’s Old Quarter. From Luxembourg Gare (central station) it’s roughly a 15-20 minute walk uphill to the casemates; from Place Guillaume II in the city centre it is about 5-10 minutes on foot. Several local buses stop near the old town; signage in the pedestrian area directs visitors to the Bock and related interpretive sites.
