The approach combines steep paths, scree slopes and short exposed sections; many ascents start from routes around the park headquarters near the town of Žabljak. The upper reaches include glacial cirques and small alpine lakes that surround the summit ridges.
The massif was shaped by Pleistocene glaciation, which produced the steep cliffs and cirque basins seen today; the area has been protected as part of Durmitor National Park since the 20th century. Mountaineering and mountain tourism have been the main uses of the terrain since it became accessible to recreational hikers.
