Bobbio Abbey

Bobbio Abbey, formally the Abbey of San Colombano, is a monastic foundation in Bobbio, northern Italy, established in 614 by the Irish missionary Saint Columbanus. It grew into an influential religious centre and a repository of medieval learning.

The abbey historically housed a significant scriptorium and library that preserved and copied manuscripts through the early Middle Ages, helping to transmit classical and religious texts. The church and cloister remain focal elements of the surviving complex.

Over the centuries the abbey complex was modified and rebuilt in different architectural phases, reflecting its long ecclesiastical role and local patronage. Parts of the abbey continue to be visited for their medieval architecture and historical importance.

The abbey sits in the town of Bobbio in the Emilia-Romagna/Lombardy border area, set in a valley south of Piacenza and accessible by regional roads.
