Black Church

The Black Church (Biserica Neagră) is a medieval Gothic church in the historic centre of Brașov, Romania, originally built by the local German-speaking (Transylvanian Saxon) community in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is one of the largest Gothic churches in the region and is noted for its scale, vaulted interior and rich collection of textiles and liturgical objects.

The building acquired the popular name “Black Church” after a major fire in 1689 that blackened much of the exterior stone. Inside, the church preserves a significant collection of Middle Eastern carpets and a large historic pipe organ, both reflecting the city’s role in regional trade and ecclesiastical life.

The church sits within Brașov’s old town at the base of the Carpathian foothills and is a focal point of the city’s medieval street plan and tourism route.
