The Bismarck Range in Papua New Guinea is a rugged highland chain known to trekkers and researchers. Travel here involves multi‑day jungle treks, remote village culture and high‑altitude habitats with steep ridges.
The Bismarck Range is a mountain range in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea and forms part of the island’s mountainous spine. It includes several high peaks, the best known of which rises to over 4,500 metres.
The range offers high-altitude terrain and is a destination for mountaineering and extended treks rather than mass tourism; conditions can be remote and logistically demanding. Access typically requires travel from provincial centres followed by multi-day approaches to higher slopes.
European explorers and colonial administrators gave the range its modern name during the late 19th century German colonial period. The area has since remained sparsely populated and has been used locally for subsistence activities in lower valleys while higher ridges are largely wild.
Geographically it lies within the New Guinea Highlands of Papua New Guinea, forming part of the island’s central mountain systems and providing major watershed divides.
