Biskupin
Archaeological Site Archaeological Iron Age fortified settlement and open-air museum
An Iron Age fortified settlement reconstructed as an open-air museum in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship; visitors walk timber ramparts, see house reconstructions and learn about prehistoric crafts.
Biskupin is an archaeological site in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland containing the remains of a well-planned fortified settlement associated with the Lusatian culture, generally dated to the early Iron Age (around the 8th century BC). The site is one of Poland’s best-known prehistoric settlements and includes large reconstructions that illustrate the original layout.
The site features visible timber ramparts, a moat and rows of reconstructed thatched houses arranged on a grid. An adjacent open-air museum presents archaeological finds and explains construction techniques and daily life within the fortified settlement.
Major excavations began in the 1930s under archaeologists such as Józef Kostrzewski, which revealed the settlement plan and timber architecture; later work has focused on conservation and interpretation. The reconstructions built in the 20th century have played a strong role in popularising the site.
Biskupin lies near the town of Żnin in north-central Poland, within the Kuyavian lake district. The site sits on a low rise beside former wetland areas that were suitable for settlement and defence in antiquity.
- Reconstructions: On-site reconstructions of timber houses and ramparts are based on large-scale excavations from the 1930s and are central to the visitor experience.
What to See #
- Fortified settlement: An exposed fortified settlement reconstructed on site using timber and wattle techniques to represent the original layout discovered in archaeological excavations.
